As part of the now multi-year scientific collaboration between the Interdepartmental Center of Veterinary Radiology Service and the Southern Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Portici, consolidated by a recently renewed Memorandum of Understanding, prof. Leonardo Meomartino has been appointed scientific manager of the EMS3 Operational Unit of the project “Validations of diagnostic algorithms for the identification and characterization of traumatic injuries, penetrating or non-penetrating, in Veterinary Forensic Medicine”, approved with Current Research 2022 (n. IZS ME 05/22 RC). The Operating Unit referred to the Center is made up, in addition to prof. Meomartino, by Prof. Adelaide Greco and by Dr. Erica Castiello. The purpose of the Operative Unit is the development of objective evaluation criteria of radiographic and CT images for the localization of bullets and for the distinction of penetrating or non-penetrating trauma. The images from the two techniques will be compared with each other and, subsequently, with the results of the autopsy tests in order to clarify their sensitivity and specificity, the limits and advantages of each technique. The project is part of Forensic Veterinary Medicine, a branch that is experiencing ever greater importance, in which Diagnostic Imaging plays a primary role and in which the Center’s researchers have been engaged for some time.
